Those with accounting experience:

I'm thinking about pursuing a degree in accounting. Can accounting be enjoyable at all? I'm not a math genius, do you need to be one? However, I enjoyed math in school when I understood it and I like keeping mine and my husband's finances/bills organized. I'm a real stickler about it. I got straight A's in school, (high school and previous, haven't started college yet) so I believe I have the brains for it...(I think...?) Is it a good career to pursue? Could I ever do it from home?

Thanks!

I worked as a CPA for a big 4 on the tax side. It sounds like you would probably make a good accountant if you are a stickler for detail and like to multitask. The good thing about accounting is that you will always have plenty of job opportunities. The bad thing about my job was that I worked a lot of long hours and pretty much always had deadlines to meet. I think the experience that I gained was great, but your personal life might suffer a bit if you sign on with a large public accounting firm. Don't worry about being a math genius. If you can do basic functions and use Excel, that's really all you need.

Anyways, I decided after 6 years of accounting work that it wasn't for me, and now I'm in dental school. Talk about living on both ends of the professional spectrum.

accountants work all the time. They have numerous deadlines to make. My friends at work who work in the accounting area worked this year on: New Year's Eve, New Year's day, every Saturday so far and will be working on the upcoming MLK holiday. Thank goodness for the company they are on salary.
