it seems the boost kicks in very sporadically sometimes not at all

no smoke or any thing to sujjest the turbo is blown just works a times and more often not

Turbos work under extreme heat and pressure......You may have some of the vanes (fan blades) inside the turbo broken off. Also there is a waste gate....Kind of like a pressure relief for your turbo system.....If it sticks open? then all the "boost" pressure is being vented and you are getting nothing. My suggestion is to have a shop or dealer look into that problem if you are not set up to do the tests and repairs yourself. No need in letting a small problem turn into a major repair.

hi there,
pound to a penny it is the mass air flow sensor, these are common for failure on this type of car. look where the airfilter is and just after the filter housing heading towards the inlet manifold there will be a black bodied sensor with a multi plug attached, this is the mass air flow sensor.
Quite cheap too.
past history tells us too

Its more than likely you have a leak from your inter cooler pipes try tightening the retaining clips .Mick UK
