Methane is a fuel that is very much in use today. Methane (natural gas) is used to heat homes and been experimented with as a fuel for cars as well in the form of CNG (compressed natural gas). Methane, unto itself, does not have an odor...it is that essence of the cow's digestive tract that makes it smell bad. They put the 'smell' into it for natural gas pipelines so you can tell if there is a gas leak.
100 miles per litre...you must have one heck of a process to get that that sort of mileage out of a litre of methane. Methane has only got about 930 BTU per cu. ft., so you must have it compressed an awful lot to get that much mileage out of it.
Maybe to further your research, you should leave your home world to get a new perspective...you need to get your head out of Uranus.
