I read rave reviews about this Nature's Miracle stuff, but it is ridiculously expensive.

Its expensive but it works... I have also heard about the Oxyclean...I also hear good things about "Zero Odor".... mabey try that first....or here are some other home remidies:good luck...smile

1) Neutralize the odor by alternating baking soda and vinegar. I always follow cleaning up a pet mess by sprinkling the area with baking soda, leaving that overnight, and then sweeping or vacuuming it up. Pet urine often has both acidic and alkaline components, so the next step is to neutralize the alkaline baking soda and residual alkaline odor using a strong vinegar wash; I use 2 cups of white distilled water to 1 gallon of water. Wash the area with the vinegar wash, and then rinse. The strong smell of the vinegar will dissipate in a few hours.

2) For pet stains, there are a number of methods that can effectively remove lingering odors. If you plan to use regular cleaning supplies, please use caution. Many commercial household products contain ingredients that can be harmful to your pet. There are several products available that are formulated with pets in mind to reduce these risks.

Enzymes are commonly used to completely remove odors from pet stains. These enzymes work by penetrating into the stain and breaking up tiny molecules that are causing the odor problem. This is an effective way to naturally remove stains.

3) Here's what you will need to have on hand to make the mixture:

1-16oz Bottle of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide Solution

2-TBSP of baking soda

1-Large Box of Corn Starch

In a glass jar, mix the peroxide and baking soda together by stirring until well mixed.

For a dry stain:

Apply to all dried pet urine stains (Use the the Pet Pee Detective Lamp to locate all dry urine spots) by pouring about 4-6oz of the liquid directly on the stain. Let dry and repeat as necessary. Note: This recipe will actually bleach some carpets (like mine) and leave a light spot. Make sure to test on an inconspicuous carpeted area first before going crazy with the stuff.

For a wet stain:

Sprinkle the corn starch heavily over the stain to draw it up from the carpet. Corn starch is an absorbent powder that works well for this purpose. After the stain is dry, vacuum up corn starch and follow instructions for dry stain removal.

It's ridiculously expensive? Huh? It's $3.99 for 16oz at Petsmart. If $4 is too much money, then perhaps you should rethink the whole having a pet thing. What happens when the pet has a $1000 emergency?

Personally, I use Simple Solution, but it's in the same price range.

Message: I paid $10 for a 32 oz spraybottle. That's expensive. Thanks for accusing me of not being willing to take care of my pet.

Hey, I didn't say that, you did. I said that $4 is not a price point that should be worried about if you have a pet. $10 shouldn't be worried about if you have a pet. All I did was asked what you would do with a $1000 vet bill? If you answered "Not be willing to take care of my pet", then that's on you, not me.

Oxy-clean.

A friend of mine introduced me to this use of OC. I was amazed and delighted. He made a mix with water and the OC powder and sponged it into the carpet. I really killed the odor and stain.
