it is very difficult to prove if this is a "real" experince or something that the mind makes up in response to a low oxygen state or other chemical changes. the mindis very good at playing tricks ..... a good example is the many dreams that people have.
also people are conditioned by what they hear. if you expect to see a white light, then your mind may provide that for you.

You ask ~
> what really happens during a near death experience?
Some people have near death experiences, some don't. what do you think actually causes them? And have you ever had one? <
What 'really happens' ~ can only be know by those who believe 'they know,' leaving the rest of us to ask questions like yours.
What causes them? In the absence of a definitive answer, we are left with guesswork, hypothesis, theory and conjecture.
Have I ever had one? No, though in '03 I was nearly there (apparently) 3 times. But I've no memory of any or anything of 'that' period as I was basically 'out of my tree ' as a result of the drugs fed into my system there in hospital.

I was involved in a motorcycle accident when I was 17 and was thrown off the back of the bike, I saw a lot of memories flash in my mind like a projector reel, all before I hit the ground, I don't know if it was a near death experience as such, I did think I was going to die, but when people say that your life flashes in front of your eyes, it's really true, and I never wish to experience that again.

Well I think I had one many years ago ,My boyfriend at the time was a very jealous person anyway we got into an argument and he chocked me so hard that I passed out but right before I came to I could see like alot of darkness but there was also light and I could here someone calling my name and they did it until I came to,now here is the thing the person that was calling my name was a woman and there was no one else in the room but me and him,I believe it was my grandmother calling my name and I truly berlieve if she had not been calling my name I would have died, also right as I was coming to my body felt like it was tingling all over sort of like when your feet or hand goes to sleep, well my whole body felt like that.

what causes them it depends on the situation and your belief. however, in the near death experience, you can't see anything. the only thing you can see is the bright white light, even so, its painful to see because its too bright. brighter than the sun. at the same time as well you might hear voices or you don't. if you hear voices, that voice will call you name, but its to faint to hear only if you focus, but its hard to focus in the time of such heretic. If you don't hear voices, it means for two; either you live to see mosaic of stitches on your body or others will see your dead body.

What they are is your mind trying to keep you 'occupied' while your body attempts to heal itself. It can be a comforting experience, which helps your body relax, and heal.
