Formal hostilities existed from September 1939 until May of 1945. Some mopping up operations and Nazi resistance took place after VE Day, but the war was formally over in May 1945. It didn't end in Japan until September of 1945.
So, start to finish, World War II lasted almost exactly six years.

World War 2 began when Great Britain & France declared war on Germany on 3rd September 1939, following Germany's invasion of POland on September 1st. The war in Europe ended with Germany's surrender on May 7th 1945.
The following day, May 8th, was declared as VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) in Great Britain and USA. President Truman announced the end of the war in Europe on radio at 9am EST and declared Sunday May 13th as a day of prayer and thanksgiving.
The Soviet Union celebrated VE Day on May 9th.
Hitler committed suicide on April 29th 1945.

It started when the Nazis invade Poland in 1939 and ended with Hitler's suicide in 1944, but for the US, it went on unitl August 1945 when the Japanese surrendered after the first 2 nuclear bombs were dropped on Hiroshima nd Nagasaki
