By all means, add this book to your collection. As you probably know, it is a sequel to Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, which itself was a sequel to Song of the Trees. Told from the point of view of young Cassie Logan, this series of books deals with the historic struggles of an African American family who are independent land owners in racist Mississippi.

In these first three books in the series, the reader is expected to mature as Cassie does. In Song of the Trees, a book intended for young children, Cassie is a young child. In Roll of Thunder, an ideal book to share with children, Cassie is a fourth grader. But Let the Circle Be Unbroken embodies a sense of bitter realism, requiring greater maturity and sensitivity on the part of the reader. Though the book ends with a celebration of family, hardship and tragedy must be faced throughout.

Mildred Taylor's achievement in the Logan family series, based in part on her own family's experiences, is remarkable. I know of no other book(s), whether for young readers or adults, that will better capture this historic period and setting than these novels. The Land, which was written later, actually is a prequel and tells how the Logan family's story as independent land owners begins with a grandfather figure.

In historic order (rather than the order in which they were written) the series proceeds as follows: The Land [1870s], The Well, The Mississippi Bridge [1931], Song of the Trees, Roll of Thunder, Let the Circle . . ., The Friendship [1933], The Road to Memphis [Cassie in high school], and Logan [move to Ohio]. The Solid Gold Cadillac, not exactly a part of the series, but based on Taylor's own childhood, is the story of a family driving back to visit Mississippi.

Good reading!
