Most likely cause it a problem with the power supply by the BIOS error signal you gave (check the link below). So it may be a more critical component than just the battery. Especially if the system is having the same problems while plugged into the wall.

sounds like the motherboard/bios is the problem, not the battery. Even if the battery would barely holda charge, the computer would still run off the power supply.
When you turn a computer on and lights 'hang', that usually means it is the bios/mb, and your laptop is toast.

Try removing some of the hard drive, cdrom, floppy, some of the memory sticks, to see if they are causing the problem, what every can be removed. Re-start after removing each item. If you've removed what you can, and it still don't start, then start shopping for a new laptop.

good luck!

I read about four of the responses you have received and if I were you, I would take my laptop to a reliable shop that specializes in laptops and have it checked. Not fixed but have it checked. Based on their diagnosis, you decide if you would fix it or get another one.

Good luck.

By the way, I have a strong feeling that your laptop doesn't start because the battery is dead and there is no full communication with the AC supply.
