Capitalize when you talk about it as an entity:
The Man who fell to Earth; We saw Earth from our spaceship.
Don't capitalize when you talk about it as an object:
He held a handful of earth and scattered it.
The punch rocked him off his feet and he hit the earth with a shudder.

When you are talking about the planet e.g. I live on Earth.
If you're talking about earth as in soil e.g. It is buried deep in the earth, you won't need a capital at the beginning.

When you say earth as in dirt, it's lowercase. When you say Earth as in the planet, it's uppercase.

She bent down stuck her spade in the wet earth.
