Well I love the Lord of the Rings movies they're the best, but in the Return of the King, I don't think I'm quite sure about what Frodo meant when he said "We set out to save the Shire, and it has been saved ... but not for me . . ." Please help me out so I can respect the last minute of the movie

Frodo means that being a ring bearer has changed him. He can no longer live in the shire and return to the way that he was before the ring came to him. Sam, Merry, and Pip while they shared in this great adventure can still be the carefree hobbits they used to be. The ring of power can poison the mind and change people and that's what happened to Frodo.

In the book, the hobbits return to the Shire after the war and it has been taken over by Sauruman, Wormtongue, and assorted human thugs. Merry and Pipin organize a rebellion and save the Shire, before Frodo leaves for the Undying Lands. You should really read the book, the movies are great, but they have to leave out a lot of interesting side plots and characters.

Like so much of.L.O.T.R. this scene is fraught with symbolism. Among the things that Tolkien was trying to convey is that sometimes sacrifices have to be made for the greater good, also the wound at Weathertop, Shelob's bite, and the burden of the ring have left Frodo with wounds that will not completely heal. I would suggest reading the book for a more complete overview of this scenario.
