When ending an essay, it is good form to remention the obstacles whatever they are and not to introduce any new information.

You could say something like:

During their exploration west, Lewis and Clark overcame many ordeals and obstacles to succeed. As discussed these difficulties include... Though they were faced with such hardships and tribulations they broke the unknown the barriers that had lain between the east and west. They opened our opportunities for expansion and development.

Something along those lines.

Another good tip to remember when writing an essay, be sure to discuss in some aspect the consequences of what your topic had on society. Like with Lewis & Clark, what consequences (good and bad) did their exploration result in.

Good luck

A few years ago, I read the book by Stephen Ambrose on the L&C expedition and what most impacted me was what a huge achievement the whole expedition was under the most incredibly difficult circumstances. See if you can compare it to a more recent event, like landing on the moon, or some other event in which the participants overcame great physical or technological obstacles. Given how primitive their equipment was and how little knowledge they had of the actual voyage, I think the L&C expedition was the greatest achievement in this country's history.
