Do you agree that we should have them? and if so should that be the only thing looked at for graduation? For example: In florida if you do not pass the 10th grade FCAT you do not graduate with a high school diploma no matter what your grades are.

I think standardized tests should be part of a whole form of assessment on students. They provide a baseline for all students, and they hold teachers accountable for students who might otherwise be pushed to the wayside. However, I don't think one test should be the end-all. That's simply illogical. I think standardized tests should be used alongside portfolios of student work. Teachers should be responsible for submitting work into the portfolios, but students should be responsible as well. Students should choose some of their work that they feel reflects what they've learned and accomplished. All of this combined should be considered when passing students.

I think there needs to be a measurement system in place but I do believe it is unfair to expect all children to be at the exact same place, at the exact same time. Teachers have 100% more information to teach as compared to 20 years ago with the exact same amount of time to teach it in. It is unrealistic and unfair to the students.

Also you have students who come to school knowing how to read on day 1 and students who come to school and barely know their name, much less any letters or words. It is an unfair system to expect both of the students to accomplish the same goals in the same amount of time. Not only is it unfair for the student that comes in with no previous knowledge, it is also unfair for the other student to have to slow down so that others can catch up because of the mandated curriculum by the state or district.

Teachers have a college diploma and most of them also have additional degrees and/or training. We need to trust that our teachers know how to do their job and stop letting it be run by the government people that have not stepped into a public school classroom since they were in high school 30+ years ago!!

I think standardized tests have their importance in a general way to show where strengths of intelligence lie in some fields but I do not believe they should be the measure only by which one is judged upon for graduation. There are other things such as a balance of learning in various fields of concentration for a well-rounded education.

I think standardised tests are great, because it is important to gather data and statistics, and is a way to hold teachers accountable for their performance. Students may think they are doing well in English or Math, and may be doing so compared to other students in their school, but perhaps are not doing well when compared to the state or the nation. However, I don't think that standardised tests alone should be used to determine graduation or a student's performance at school. The student could have just not had a good day on the day of the test, or the student may not do well on tests for some reason. I think standardised tests should be simply one of many tools to measure student performance.

i think standardized testing is a terrible system to run our education system by....

some students do not test well or are not intelligent in the way the tests require.

Standardized testing forces all teachers to teach the same things, they can't build thier own curriculum they have to follow strict guidlines based on what the children will need to know for grad. tests and sats.....the way schools are now is impersonal and ineffective

I think they are a waste of time and money. The only thing teachers teach is what's on these test and nothing else is discussed. I believe that people got better more rounded educations before these tests were made mandatory.

Yeah, that's really stupid. I'm homeschooled though, so I don't know too much about it.
