If you got it within five days after your period, Depo-Provera is effective immediately.

P.S. To all the people saying 24 hours, its not. Here is a direct quote from the Depo-Provera monograph by Pfizer:
"If administered within the first 5 days after the onset of a normal menstrual period, DEPOPROVERA is effective from the day of injection. When DEPO-PROVERA is given later in the menstrual cycle it may not be effective for the first 3 to 4 weeks after the injection and another method of contraception (non-hormonal) should be used during this time."

The first shot of Depo Provera is usually given during or a few days after the start of a menstrual period. After 24 hours, the shot is effective birth control for the next 13 weeks. Many women find it useful to schedule their next shot slightly earlier than necessary; if something prevents them from making their appointment, there will be a window of opportunity to receive their next shot.

A word of warning. My daughter got very sick while on Depo (unrelated). She didn't tell the Dr. or me she was on the shot. Since enithe of us knew, we didn't tell her that antibiotics can screw up your shots effectiveness. Would you like to meet my granddaughter. Oops!
