I agree with Kelly B, I started by training my dog to sit and stay basics and then I taught him he doesn't eat or get a toy til I tell him to. It is all about control, and I have complete control over him, when I got him from the pound he was a rowdy 50 pound out of control golden retriever, 8 months old. I don't even think anyone house trained him before me. Before I got him I watched a lot of the dog whisperer, very good show. By the way he is my first dog and I had him completely trained after 2 months. Don't forget to give them lots of love and I don't believe in training with treats, that made it more difficult for me. He just likes petting and "good boy" stuff.

Depends on what you are trying to train him/her to do. Is it a puppy or an old dog? What breed is it and what is its' natural temperament? Anyway, I suggest a beginning level obedience class if you have never trained a dog before on your own.

first teach dog to sit
push his but down
then give treat
when sitting is working then teach stay
put treat on floor put hand flat in dogs face and say sit and stay
make dog stay..for 20 seconds, building up the seconds each time....then dog has learned to sit and stay
you are on the road to controlling your dog with more tricks
repetition in the beginning, is most important!

well to train your dog you should use treats so that when you make a dog do a certain thing, say a name for it, and give him a treat, and keep doing this, sooner or later the dog will do the action you want it to because its used to getting treats for doing it and will remember the name you said when you wanted it to do the action.

I HIRED A PERSONAL TRAINER FOR MY DOGS IT TAKES A LOT OF WORK EVEN AFTER THE TRAINER LEAVES. WHAT YOU NEED TO DO FIRST IS DECIDE WHAT BEHAVIORS YOU WILL AND WILL NOT TOLERATE. THERE ARE ALOT OF DIFFERENT TRAINING STYLES AND MOST OF THEM WORK, SO YOU NEED TO DO SOME RESEARCH TO SEE WHAT BEST COMPLIMENTS YOUR PERSONALITY. THE TWO THINGS ALL TECNIQUES HAVE IN COMMON IS, ALWAYS MAKE KNOWN WHO IS BOSS, AND NO MATTER WHAT BE CONSISTANT. IF YOU ARE NOT CONSISTANT YOU ARE TEACHING THE DOG THEY ONLY HAVE TO LISTEN SOMETIMES. ONE THING TO KEEP IN MIND IS DOGS ARE LIKE KIDS IN THE ASPECT THAT THEY ARE ALWAYS LEARNING FROM YOU GOOD OR BAD.

Reward them when they do something good, or something you want them to do. Scold them (verbally) when they do something bad. Start slowly. For example, if you're trying to house train them, give them a treat when they go to bathroom outside. If they have an accident inside, let them know that you are not pleased and put them outside. They probably won't immediately get what you are trying to do, but they will eventually learn that going to bathroom outside is good and gets them treats! The same goes for teaching tricks.
