1:1 is the ratio.

MgO since Mg forms a 2+ ion and O forms a 2- ion.

If you are talking about the balanced equation, however, this changes. Oxygen is a diatomic molecule in its free state: O2.

The balanced equation is:

2 Mg + O2 ---> 2 MgO
