Nov. 22, 1963.

A day frozen in time. A day that robbed us of our innocence and replaced it with fear and suspicion. A day that would spawn dozens of conspiracy and coverup theories. A day still unexplainable, even after 40 years.

As President John F. Kennedy rode through the streets of Dallas in a Lincoln convertible, he was shot in the head by alleged sniper Lee Harvey Oswald, who had beaded in on the president with a rifle from the sixth-floor window of the Texas School Book Depository.

After the gunfire cracked and her husband slumped in the car seat, Jacqueline Kennedy crawled over the back seat of the convertible and onto the trunk to try to either reach for something or help a Secret Service agent climb on to the car. Her legs and skirt were spattered with the president's blood. Her face was contorted by terror.

The nation was in shock, and the days that followed seemed surreal.

Oswald was gunned down by Dallas nightclub owner Jack Ruby while millions of Americans watched on their television sets. On the day of his father's funeral -- the day he would turn 3 years old -- John-John Kennedy saluted his father's casket as it passed in front of St. Matthew's Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

No one could take their eyes off their televisions for days. And at the same time, no one wanted to be a witness to this history.
This story has been updated to correct an error in the originally published version. On Nov. 22, 1963, in Dallas, Jacqueline Kennedy is believed to have reached for something on the rear portion of the car or to help a Secret Service agent who was climbing into the car to protect her and President John F. Kennedy, who had been fatally shot. A story in Sunday's Capital-Journal erroneously described her actions.
