Make a PR Package including your CD and a bio and recent gigs and gigs you are going to play soon. Go to the stations in person wearing your best outfit- (i'm not kidding) make sure you give goodies (candies, flowers, fancy pens, gift basket) to the scretary/receptionist and be smoozy nice to her/him. Then ask to see th DJ that plays your type of music (know the person's name before you get to the station) and they'll try to work you in.

If you don't get in, leave your packet with the receptioist along with tickets to your next gig.

This will get you in good with the person who can get you in good.

Call the radio station...and do this when they ARE accepting requests.
Alot of the stations are owned by a conglomerate, and have a specific "Play List' that they have to adhere to. (Think "Clear Channel", and you will get the idea!)
They will only accept requests when they have that particular time slot programmed for it.
Otherwise, you should just get an MP3 player, and if that isn't in your budget, you could go LO-TECH and use cassettes!

listen to the station and figure out their telephone number. call in and request the song.
if you're talking about your personal music that you make (you're in a band, etc... you would probably want to start out playing at coffee shops and then once you have some popularity get your song on a colleges local radio station. (or a college). its the way to start it off.

Make sure you are promoted into a famous record label first. I can't believe nobody said this... The record label pays the stations for your songs to get heard.
