Big papa has it right but this might help too.
-5 - 10 is the same as -5 + -10 which is equal to -15.

10 - -5 can be changed to 10 + -5 which is equal to 5.

You can do it!

Excellent explanation nattiesoo!

All you have to do is switch the signs to make the other number positive or negative to make them match. If you have 10 + -5 then you would make it 10 - 5. If you have -5 - 10 then you would say -5 + - 10 = -15. A negative plus a negative will always be a negative just as a postive plus a postive will always be postive. 10 - -5 = 10+5 and would than equal postive fifteen two negatives cancel each other out because if you are subtracting a negative you are adding a postive. Get it?

positive + positive = always positive (just add)
(+3) + (+4) = (+7)

positive - positive = can be either positive or negative. if the bigger number is first, then the answer is positive. if the bigger number is second, then the answer is negative

negative + negative = always negative (ignore the + sign)
(-3) + (-5) = -8

positive + negative = will be the difference, with the sign determined by which ever number is bigger
(+3) + (-5) = -2
(+5) + (-3) = +2

positive - positive = will be either positive or negative. if the bigger number is first, then the answer is positive, if the bigger number is second, then the answer is negative

positive - negative = subtracting a negative is the same as adding it
(+3) - (-5) is the same as (+3) + (+5)

negative - negative = since subtracting a negative is the same as adding, its the same as adding a positive and negative
(-3) - (-5) is the same as (-3) + (+5)

attempt this. Draw a range line (or imagine it on your head obviously) that has a favorable and damaging side with 0 contained in the middle. Like a lengthy piece of string. you won't be able to get off the string, you could purely flow left (damaging) or precise (effectual). you initiate on the string/variety line with the first variety. Say 10. if you're subtracting, you'll flow left (in direction of 9 and eight etc). So, 10 - 3 strikes left to 7. Now, what about 10 - a damaging 3? nicely, you initiate transferring left, yet the different negatives says turn round. you ultimately end up transferring precise. 10 - - 3 = 13. once you've 10 - - - 3, you would possibly want to turn round two times and finally end up going left. This similar element works even if you're going decrease to and fro previous 0. So, 3 - 10 skill flow 10 steps left to -7. and three--10 skill flow precise to 13.

this is how my fav. math teacher taught me
SUBTRACTING NEGATIVES.
(if you get adding)

SOOY!

Same. Opposite. Opposite.YIPPIE!

easy SOOY
(pronounced soo-ey)

so like
you just make it into an addition problem

ex..

5 - (-10)=
keep the 5 the same sign
switch the neg into a pos
then switch the -10 to the opposite (+10)
and YIPPIE!
15

it takes some practice w/ these kinds of probs

1 + 1 = 2
1 - (-1) = 2
1 + (-1) = 0
(-1) - 1 = -2
(-1) - (-1) = 0

Just remember 2 subtracting a negative is adding and adding a negative is subtracting.
