Positive plus a negative is same as regular subtraction:
(10 + -5 is same as 10-5...answer is +5)
Negative minus a positive= (-5-10= -15)
Positive minus a negative= Whenever you have a minus sign and negative sign, the number becomes positive (10- -5= +15)

Try this. Draw a number line (or imagine it in your head clearly) that has a positive and negative side with zero in the middle. Like a long piece of string.
You can't get off the string, you can only move left (negative) or right (positive).
You start on the string/number line with the first number. Say 10. If you are subtracting, you are going to move left (toward nine and eight and so on). So, 10 - 3 moves left to 7. Now, what about 10 - a negative 3? Well, you start moving left, but the other negatives says turn around. You end up moving right. 10 - - 3 = 13.
If you have 10 - - - 3, you would turn around twice and end up going left. This same thing works even if you are going back and forth past zero. So, 3 - 10 means move 10 steps left to -7. And 3--10 means move right to 13.

Positive + positive = positive
15+10 = 25
Positive - positive = depends on the position of numbers
the first one is bigger=positive
15-10 = 5
the second one is bigger=negative
10-15 = -5
Negative + Negative = negative
(-15) + (-10) remove the plus
(-15) - 10 = -25
(-10) + (-15)
(-10) - 15 = -25
Negative - Negative = depends
(-10) - (-15) = since you subtract a negative, then they cancel and become plus
(-10) + 15 = 5
(-30) - (-20)
(-30) + 20 = -10
Negative + Positive = depends
-15 + 10 = for this, it will be easier if you switch them. but make sure you keep the signs.
10 - 15 = -5
(see negative - negative examples and you can do the same)
Positive + negative = depends
15 + (-10) = you remove the plus, just like negative + negative above
15 - 10 = 5
hope that helps

1) positive+positive=negative
2) negative+negative=negative For this, add the two numbers together as if they were positive, then make that answer negative
3) positive+negative=? This depends on which number would be greater if both were positive. If the negative number would be greater, then your answer will be negative. However, if the positive number would be greater, then your answer will be positive. Adding a negative is just like subtracting a positive. Just remove the + from the problem. Ex. 10+-5=10-5=5
4) negative-positive=negative Add the numbers together as if they were positives, then make the answer negative. Ex. (-5-10)=-(5+10)=-(15)=-15
5) positive-negative=positive Subtracting a negative is like adding a positive. Ex. 10--5=10+5=15

Lets us the number 10 and 5 to show you what each is asking.
10+5= 15 (Easy huh?)
-10+-5= -15
10+ -5 = 5 (it is almost like 10 - 5. Its the same thing. 10 -5 = 5)
-10-5 (change the middle sign to a pluse and make the 5 a negative it becomes -10 + -5. Wait look above we have already had that problem. It becomes -15.)
10 - -5 (change the signs. 10 + 5= 15)

P + P = P
N + P = N\P -5 + 6 = 1 -10 + 2 = -8
P + N = N\P 6 + -5 = 1 2 + -10 = -8
N + N = N
P - P = P\N 5 - 6 = -1 6 - 5 = 1
N - P = N
P - N = P
N - N = P\N -2 - -4 = 2 -10 - -2 = -8
N = negative
P = positive

When doing a positive plus a negative, the result is positive if the negative is less than the positive, and it is negative if the negative number is more than the positive.
When doing a negative minus a positive, the result is always negative.
When doing a positive minus a negative, the result is always positive.
