When the snake sheads its skin, there is a part left on the end of the tail. Each time the snake sheads it leaves another layer. once enough layers are built up it forms a rattle. The twitch the tail and shake it rapidly when threatened producing a ratteling sound.

The tail is made up of scales modified into beads around bigger scales which they vibrat at a fast rate wich creats that sound u hear. Its kinda like taking beans and shaking them in a cup.A rattle segment is grown with every shed so the older the snake the biger and long the rattle. This isnt true in all cases cuz the rattle can and does break off and damage. You just have to be careful cuz a new born rattle snake does have a fuctioning rattle until after its first shed.

hope this helps... if u have any other questions feel free to e-mail at socalherpers@yahoo.com

Every time the snake sheds its skin, it leaves a ring of skin at the end of the tail. These rings can then be knocked together when the snake shakes its tail, and this produces the sound.

Rattlesnakes have hollow air filled chambers that are modified scales with tiney "beads" inside them, allowing them to make a noise with threatened, though most rattlers tend to move away unless they feel cornered.
