Two French explorers, BrulÄ and Grenoble (sometimes spelled Grenolle), were the first Europeans to cast eyes on the great Lake Superior around 1622.

There is alot of controversy over this, but more and more scholars are leaning towards the Vikings, from archeological evidence found in Wisconsin . The archeology dept. at the University of Wisconsin may be able to give you more info.
