saying it's called 'soccer' when everyone else on the planet calls it football.
It's only you lot who call it Soccer.

the rules of association football were drawn in the early 1860's in England. At that time the biggest sport in america was killing bison.
for your information there are 223000 football clubs in Europe alone and more than 1.5 million football teams in the world. over 246 million people in the world play football regularly, it's the most popular sport in the world.
America bastardised 'rugby' football and decided to call it 'american' football, which also happens to be the most boring sport in the world, next to formula 1. It's only you in the whole world who call proper football (played with the feet, not the hands) 'soccer'.
BTW Norskeyen, are you ok or do you want me to call a doctor?

Actually, if you've been on this board long enough, you would notice that the people doing the correcting are the ones who are telling us americans that it is football. I know good and well that it's football, and I call it both. But when it comes to accusing, Europeans seem to get a lot more upset about it when we say soccer and not football. It's really no big deal. I mean, we all the love the sport right? Shouldn't that be all that matters?

First of all, Americans were already playing our version of football here when you published rules to your version in England. When European immigrants introduced your version of football we already had a sport called football.
Secondly, can you guess where the term "Soccer" originates from? That's right, it came to us from England. It was used in England as an abbreviation of "Association Football" and was used to differentiate the sport from Rugby Football. Far be it for a lowly American to educate you on the history of the sport that you love so dearly, but maybe you should get your facts straight about "Soccer" before you jump on your soapbox.

You sholdn't criticise the septic tanks. Remember they think they ARE the world.

They bastardize everything, so there is no chance they will do what the rest of the world does.

My own opinion of it is that if they call their game Amercan Football that would be ok. After all, the Austrailians call there game Aussie Rules Football.

Also, isn't calling the american game Football not very macho? I would have thought that the Americans would want a more macho name such as Killer Ball. or Gridiron

Honestly, I think we could do with one less sport called football.

Between American Football, "Soccer"/Football, Australian Rules Football, Candadian Football, Rugby Football and Gaelic Football, I think it makes a lot of sense to start thinking of new names.

All things considered, as annoying as it is to hear Americans call the game "soccer", it certainly helps avoid confusion over the game to which they are refering.

It doesn't matter to me. I grew up in America so I call it soccer. When someone calls it football, it still kinda confuzes me. I just wish that whoever called football soccer in the first place is just dumb. Just call whoever corrects you for saying football a stupid American.

Americans are the only right people on this earth. Money talks. So you shut up. Soccer is correct, it came before football, so did american football before rugby.

OK now children... let's look at the word...

FOOTball - i.e. a ball used in a sport using predominantly the feet to kick the ball... sheesh, it's not that hard!

And American Football isn't a patch on rugby - why do you need all that girly padding
