You need a license because you are going to collect taxes while doing business.

You very well might. First, you can't operate a business in an area that doesn't allow that kind of business, so you might have to check with the local zoning office. For example they might frown on such a business operating out of a house in a residential area.

You should probably take out a Business License, which is basically a tax. You should also check with the state tax office to find out if auto detailing is a taxable service. A lot of states tax the sale of goods, but not of services; some tax both. So check, because there may be taxes to pay.

You may also need an auto repair shop license. Check againwith the state or the local government. If "auto repairs" are a licensed activity, the next question is whether auto detailing is considered a "repair" under the law. It might not be. A large reputable auto repair shop may be able to tell you if a repair license is needed in your area.

You need a license for any kind of business. People are leery of hiring people these days, especially when it comes to their home and cars and would probably ask to see proof that you are legit.
