Q: for Authors, writers and novelists; is there an emotional connection with the characters that you create?

How about with the antagonists in your stories, any connection or sympathy for them? Even though the characters are only fictitious but do you find yourself forming a bond with them as you’re unfolding their personas, their struggles and their lives in your stories. If not how do you make the drama so real and compelling?

I do have an emotional connection to my characters, even the antagonists. I don't usually feel like I "create" my characters - I feel more like they tell me what they're like and what they will and will not do. If I try to force them to do something that would go against their nature, it's obvious in my writing and I usually have to go back and change the scene. Of course, they're really just thoughts in my head but for the time I'm writing about them, they're real and hopefully that shows through my work and makes them real to readers as well.

Absolutely! I get a little depressed when I finish a novel, as if I'm going to be homesick for the characters, and my favorite books to write are those which continue characters from a previous book. Especially when I'm writing a romantic plot, it helps if I'm a little in love with the hero myself.

As for the antagonist--I try not to get as emotionally involved with them!

Yes. I think this is because there are pieces of me in everything I write. Even the characters that are evil or that I dislike. In my case there is a little of me in every character I create. Some have a lot of me in them, others very little, but always something. I am very attached to all of them.

Well, I write fanfiction which means the characters I write about have already been invented, but yes, I would say I definitely do feel a srong emotional connection to them.
