What do you absolutely need? Just a computer with USB (preferably 2.0 because it's a lot faster). And if you're using a PC, make sure your iPod is the Windows-formatted variety (I don't believe you can even buy a Mac-formatted version anywhere but through Apple, but Macs can use a Windows model if you want to buy it elsewhere). That's it. You already get the (free) iTunes software, the headphones, the sync/charger cable, and a sleeve to at least somewhat protect it from scratches. Oh yeah, and music. Either access to the internet for downloaded music, or CDs if you just want to rip your existing collection.
What would I suggest buying? Get some sort of case instead of using the sleeve. Get at least a screen-guard to protect that part from scratches, if your case doesn't include one already. Get better headphones, if you don't already have them. Consider buying an AC adapter, just because you might not always have access to a computer to charge it with (and don't buy the expensive Apple adapter, since you can get at least one 3rd Party model with a handy retractable cable for half the price) or you might not want to leave your computer turned on all night just to charge your iPod for a few hours.
Docks are unnecessary (and keep in mind that most aren't compatible with any cases or sleeves), speakers are nice if you don't want to always be tied to using headphones, a car charger cable (or even just a car charger USB adapter if you want to get by with your original cable) is a must-have if you drive long distances a lot. Everything else is on an as-needed/wanted basis.

The ipod comes with the usb cable, Itunes, and ok headphones. You will need enough/extra disk space for the music you will put on it. Some accessories are a way to plug it into the car stereo (either a cassette adaptor or fm transmitter, unless your car stereo is ipod ready), better headphones, a wall charger, and speakers to play so all can hear. Look at the ipod page at www.apple.com as there are hundreds of accessories.

You might wanna consider buying the outlet charger. You would usually charge your Ipod via USB to your PC. But what if PC is not readily available when travelling? It's good to have this. It costs about $20. Just plug into any outlet and let the charging begin. Other than that, everything else are just accessories. Great for charging at the airport while waiting for your flight.

well, if you buy it brand new, it come's with a cable for your computer, ipod, ear buds(headphones) and the softwear to get started. That is all you really need.
If you want to get all the other junk, get a case, cables that let you plug it into a sterio, car, but just go to best buy or an apple store near you. They have racks of all the stuff that you could ever need.

Other than a computer it's pretty much "plug and play", the earbuds, charger and software CDare all included. I found it nice to purchase a cover for scratch protection, and a separate PC charger/dock just for convenience, but they are all optional.....I've had mine for two years and my husband and daughter have had theirs for a year - we are hooked! PS - If you want accessories Walmart has them for a pretty good price - I just bought a back up of ear bud covers for .97.

All of the "actual necessities" come with the iPod, but i would recommend spare ear buds (they break easily and fall out of your ears) and some sort of cover that exposes the click wheel (the silver back can get dirty and damaged very easily).

You don't really need anything because the iPod includes everything you need.
The iPod
iTunes software
USB Cord
Headphones
The only thing you might want is a music download program like Limewire..it's free and has more songs than iTunes.

Access to a pc with a USB port and internet. You also have to have enough memory to install and run the software and store your music.

It comes with headphones. If you want to listen to it in your home, I suggest getting a Bose Sound Dock. Other than that, it comes with everything you need - headphones, usb cable, iTunes software... etc.

The ONLY thing required to use it is a PC or MAC with a installed version of iTUNES. The iPOD (all units) comes with EVERYTHING else needed to use it, charge it, hear it. iTUNES is required to l,oad it with MP3's or downloaded music from the iTUNES store.
