The classification of being an adult is changing every day for the worse. For example, In the old days, an adult could by buy smokes and alcohol based on them looking like an adult. Now questions asked. Now, everywhere you look, older people (grey hair, wrinkles, old person smells, etc.) are getting proofed for these items - even when you know they are pushing 70 years old.
America classifies and adult as a person 18 year old and older. You can vote at 18. You have to register for military duty at 18. You are suppose to be mature and be able to make the right decisions. If so, why is the smoking ages no 19? Why do you have to be 21 to purchase alcohol? When your 60, why do you get carded for beer?
An adult moves on to bigger and better challenges in life. You get a house, own a couple of cars, have a full time job(s), acquire more bills than ever imagined, start a family, deal with snobby neighbors, clean up after others on a constant basis (even when you didn’t make the mess), keep the bill collectors happy with on-time payments, start saving for your children’s future and plan on working until your 90, or until they finally plant you in the grave. Retirement - a word that should be dissolved!
When you turn 18 and become classified as an adult, you should be entitled to all of the amenities, or, the adult age should be changed to 35.

To me, adulthood is not only having to reach an age, or physical maturity.
I think also it's more about becoming mentally mature: an adult is ideally a responsible person, who is able to take serious decisions, know right from wrong, steer his/her life into the right direction, accept the consequences of his/her acts, and if something goes wrong, be firm and strong enough to response to it in the most appropriated way. Doesn't have to be perfect, but at least have the will to act in that way.

I too need to write an essay on what an adult is so I'll help YOU out by answering this question.
"Personally, I think that being an adult is not when you turn 18 or 21. Nor do I think it is when you are physically an adult. I think it is all a state of mind. A state of mind in which you realize you are responsible for your own actions and you depend on you. An adult to me is a responsible, mature, and sophisticated person.

Adulthood does not mean just being 16+ or 18+.It is something else.Even 6 year old child can be big enough to be called an adult at the same time 35 year old man can be childish.
To me adulthood means being able to distinguish between good and bad, being able to understand your responsiblities................

The term adult describes any mature organism, but normally it refers to a human: one that is no longer a child / minor and is now either a man or a woman. Coming of age is the event of becoming an adult, i.e. of entering adulthood.

To me being an adult means to take responsibility for your own actions. I say adulthood is not marked by ones age or by a ceremony. An adult is one who has grown wise through their life and is ready to pass on their wisdom to the next generation.
