try calling him first and asking him or em asking him if he be interested in renewing old times

Keep it simple and honest, like the reason why you lost contact and now want to renew it. I went through this myself last year, emailing all the friends I lost touch with and getting back in contact with them. Normally people will reply unless of course they're harboring a grudge against you, and if that happens, well, there's no sense in pursuing. (But at least you made an effort!)

Identify who you are and let it be know you're thinking of him and so you decided to write him an e-mail. Write what's in your heart and what's on your mind. To me, that's the best way.
