There we two types of loyalists in American history....

1) The white colonists who were loyal to King George III of England during the Revolutionary war of 1776. They fled to Canada and joined the British army to fight for what the American's considered "the enemy".

2) Slaves that were enticed to join the British army in the Revolution due to the Lord Dunmore proclamation. It was introduced in 1775 and said that all African slaves (abled bodied male slaves only) who fled their masters to join and fight for the British army would be considered free men. Thousands of slaves fled to British camps on the American coast and parts of the interior to fight for their freedom. These people would also be given the title of 'loyalists' even though they weren't so much fighting for preservation of the British empire, but to get their own freedom.

Loyalist to what?

If you mean the Revolution Loyalists they were Tories. Loyal to the Crown and against the Continentals.

After the war they were very poorly treated and some were even forced to leave their homes in US for Canada.
