Researchers studying the brain of Aplysia, a marine snail are analyzing data that could help understand human brain development and diseases affecting the brain.

Aplysia's nervous system is easy for scientists to study, as it has 10,000 large neurons. In comparison, the human brain possesses 100 billiion neurons. Researchers have mapped the workings of the neurons of this snail, and have acquired a better understanding of how brain cells communicate.

By observing how genes copy and make molecules of ribonucleic acid (RNA) the researchers have learned how directions for making proteins was achieved. The scientists are able to pinpoint which genes participate in memory and learning. They have been able to document changes at a cellular level that characterize such diseases as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. They have identified 104 genes in the Aplysia that are comparable in humans. Studying the Aplysia will provide valuable information about human neurology and some neurological diseases.
