There is an annoying egret eating all the fish out of our pond. Including our koi we've been raising for years! What do I do?

You can't kill egrets- all species of them are protected. What you can do is put something over the pond or have some loud music or bells playing all of the time.
The best way to scare them off is to aim a shotgun in their direction. Even if you don't hit the bird though, and if anyone sees you, it is still a $5000 or so fine and a month in jail under the migratory bird act

This is just nature versus nature. But that doesn't help you does it. You might try putting an owl (statue) near the pond. My son tells me that other birds are afraid of owls. Don't know why. Or you may have to put a netting over the pond. My neighbor had to do that. Stopped the little thief egret.

Try to cover the pond with a high net to prevent the egret from reaching the water .

Check to make sure the egret isn't an endangered or threatened species. Then get a shotgun and use it. Sorry. The only other way is to completely cover the pond with a mesh that the bird can't remove.

Some people recommend the Water Scarecrow. It will shoot water at anything that moves in your yard. I don't know, I have never had this problem. I have heard other people say to string fishing line across the pond in a criss cross pattern.. when the bird gets down to that level and feels them but can't see them, they will flip out and leave. Here is a link.

Put a net over the pond. That's what my neighbor does to keep the cats out of the pond.

Use a fine mesh wire netting and cover your pond, also make it so you can lift it up so you can get to the pond. Good luck.
