House is not a home is a statement referring to the way you feel inside the place. A home can be an apartment, a cardboard box, etc. The saying would be referring to a situation such as a husband and wife who have been out of love for a while. In that case when you go home you don't feel the love and warmth and your house is not a home.
Have you ever heard the saying, you can never go home again? It doesn't necesarrilly refer to the house you grew up in but that time in your life or your friends at that time. It's like a first kiss or something, there can only be one and you can never go back and have another. It's actually kind of a sad notion.

I feel the more homey it is like little nicknacks, teapots, an invinting sofa with mohair throw on it, and a little candles is homey home. This is what I mean by home.
I think the more bigger or mansion-like the home is the less gathering there is of a family or get together. Everyone is in their separate room or office.

A house is not a home when there is no love in it. And that means respect of the people in it. Treating each other the way you would want to be treated.

yeh, some houses are treated as show homes, therefore not homely.A house thats lived in will have a bit of mess,a bit of character, kids drawings up etc.I thinks its very important to make a house look like a home so people feel comfortable.

Luther Vandross wrote a song, "A House is not a Home" - when there's no one there to hold you tight and no one there you can kiss goodnight.- I love that song.
