I would rewrite the formula as:
y=4-5x, or f(x)=4-5x
"y" is a function of "x" -- in other words, you manipulate x to get y.
The "4" really isn't important when it comes to slope. All the "4" does is move the whole line up or down (4 spaces). It doesn't change the slope.
One thing that -does- affect the slope is the "-5" that is multiplied to the x. Instead of being a 1:1 ratio, as the y=x graph does, you have a -5:1 ratio (for every positive number that the graph goes to the right, the graph goes 5 negative numbers down on the graph.)
... If you really want an easy way for the slope, just take the derivative of your formula, which is dy/dx, which is -5.

ok, you are trying to find the slope, right? So first you want to put it into slope-intercept form: y=mx+b. In this equation, y is y, x is x, m is slope, and b is the y-intercept. So take your equation: 5x+y=4. Subtract 5x from both sides. You end up with y=-5x+4. Now it is in the right format. We know that in the form y=mx+b, m is the slope. So the slope of the equation is the number in front of x, which is -5; or -5/1.

first, you put the equation into slope-intercept form
slope-intercept form is y=mx+b (m=slope; b=y-intercept)
5x+y=4
-5x -5x
y = -5x+4
then you take the number in the place of m (if it is --for ex.-- y=x-2, m=1)
therefore the slope is -5
to graph, you put the slope into fraction form if it is not already
this slope is -5/1 or 5/-1 (they're the same)
take the top number of the fraction (5) and (if negative) go down that number spaces(5) and 1 (denominator) to the right
or you go 5 up and 1 to the left

you should put it in y-intercept form. so its y= -5x + 4. you subtract 5 to move it to the other side.
y=mx+b, where x is ur slope, and b is your y-int.
so you start at 4, your b, and go up five, over one. because its always rise over run in slope.
5 is 5 over one, therefore, you move over 1. you go to the left, i believe. if its positive slope, you go the right.

its easier to look at it this way.
y+5x=4.
you first graph the four.
5 is 5 over 1.
after you graph the 4
go up 5 over one.
then go up 5 more and over 1.

or
1/5
I just rechecked on the wiki and I am indeed correct.
