How does a team get to win the world cup? What are the different levels they go through? Like winning against one team, then best out of three wins and goes on? And so forth.......Im a bit confused.

After qualification, the countries who qualified will be split into 8 groups of 4. Each team will play each other team in its group (ex. a team in Group A will play the other teams in Group A). Points are given based on wins, draws, and losses. This is called the Group Stages.

After each team has played the other teams in its group, the top two teams of each group advance into the Knockout Stages. This stage is set up as a bracket. The first stage (of the Knockout stage) is the Round of 16, in which 16 teams will play for a spot into the Quarter Finals.

The second stage is the Quarter-finals, which consists of 8 teams. The 4 teams that win the QF will advance into the semi-finals.

The third stage is the Semi-Finals. The 4 teams that advanced into the SF will then play for a spot into the Finals.

The fourth stage consists of a 3rd place match. This takes place between the 2 teams that did NOT advance into the finals. The winner of this match is 3rd in the tournament, while the loser is 4th.

The last stage is the finals, which consists of the two winning teams that advanced out of the SF. The winner of this match is declared the World Cup Champion while the loser is placed 2nd in the tournament.

That is just the basic structure of it. There are more rules involved concerning draws/overtime/penalty shootouts. If you would like to know more, just let me know and I'd be more than happy to help you out.

Hope that helps!

Technically, soccer has no rules! There are 17 laws in soccer. The laws that apply to the world cup are the FIFA laws. There are tons of sites with explanations of the laws and how they are applied.

My favorite . . . http:\\asktheref.com . . . They have explanations about difficult calls from real refs. There are differences in the application of the laws based upon the age of the players.

There are also 10 sporting, moral and ethical principles of fairplay that have been adopted in the FIFA Fairplay Code. Just go to the official FIFA home site.

The path to the world cup is really too complicated for this site. The FIFA home page can help you.
