I'd love to make one too! I saw it done on HGTV. I've seen unfinished wood trays at craft stores, like Michael's, also at a place that sells unfinished wood furniture. Shouldn't be too hard to find, or cost that much.

The best place is second hand stores, garage sales, Salvation Army, etc. These are everywhere, and since you are using mosaics and will be covering a majority of the survace, the condition is only a concern as stability. Most of these trays have never been used, or very little use. You can also find some quirky ones this way.

I would try a local lumber yard if you can't find one at a craft fair. Your local lumber yard may be able to cut a piece of wood in an oval or rectangle shape, and you can buy some cabinet handles for the sides, and you can use some tile for the lip of the tray, just build it up first with a strip of wood.. just a thought..

You can buy the trays at a lot of different hobby stores such as Hobby Lobby. Even some stain glass stores carry them. Any store that deals in crafts should be able to help you or you can use that for your search on the Internet.
