Firefox.
Safer
Better privacy
User has more influence
Has many installable extensions that give extra value/abilities
BTW: there are more than only these 2 browsers. Each has his pros and cons. I use more than one browser - each for what
the specific browser does best. My default browser is called
K-Meleon. Opera is also good and fast. Overview at:
http://www.alternativebrowseralliance.com/browsers.html
There are some IE shells e. g. Maxton that have good features. http://webtips.dan.info/brand-x/msie-skins.html
The guy does not like IE but that is sure a good collection of links.

The new IE challenges Firefox, but Firefox is still the winner. If not for any other reason, for all the great FREE extension and customization possibilities!

Overall.. Firefox is better
It is much better when downloading files too
But it is a little bit heavier, more CPU usage (if you have a slow computer)
However, some sites and some options are only compatible with IE.. but those are few, and the Mozilla guys are developing Firefox

So few people (comparatively) use Firefox that it's hardly worth the effort to write a virus to exploit it. So that makes it a much better/safer tool right now.
But as it grows in popularity, it becomes a greater target...

All the "experts" say Firefox is better and more secure. But, it is all about personal preference.
