The company will use an ozonator and will clean the carpet. But isn't the odor also trapped in the pad? Will it smell a year after the cleaning?

I used to work in insurance, and the company I worked for generally replaced all furniture and carpets that were smoke damaged - they did say that the restoration co could get rid of most of the smell, but on certain days (like really humid, hot days) the smell would return.

So - I think the answer is no. Ask for new carpet.

You will be surprised at how well restoration companies are at getting rid of smoke damage. One of the office buildings I worked in had a fire in it. They were there for three or four days, but when they were gone, minus the actual burned office, you wouldn't have known there was a fire. But, you will get what you pay for. Likely though, your insurance company will have more say in who does the work.

I don't think they can get the smoke smell out. My experiance with smoke damage is to replace the carpet.
