I've driven a Porsche 911 Carrera 3.5L and the sound was *unique*... but that's a dream car I cannot afford...
My uncle has a Lancia Kappa and the sound of the engine has also drawn my attention. It's a 2.0 gasoline engine and sounds really nice.
Until last week, I thought diesel engines had the worst sound in the world; but then I drove my friend's Lancia Lybra 1.9 jtd and waw, what a sound :)
Which makes are famous for their engine sounds? Besides Porsche, I know, I love them, but they are too expencive ;)

Yeah, changing your exhaust changes the engine sound I know... but it's more then that... When I'm inside those Lancia's, the engine is very quiet, but when you accelerate, it gets loud :) That's what I want... Is every Lancia like that? Can you buy Lancia in the States? You're really missing something if you can't lol...
I'm a student so I can't afford much, but I'm thinking about buying a Lancia Dedra, or maybe an Alfa Romeo 145. Or maybe, very maybe a porsche 944, I've seen some cheap offers on ebay :)
What would you recommend?

Give a listen to the Cadillac CTS-V. I heard one just the other
day, and it sounds like a supercar -and it almost performs like
one too. The best sounding street-legal car that I've ever heard
is the Ford GT. So nice is the exhaust note, that Motor Week
(the television magazine show) uses it as their road test intro.

Ferrari, for their buzzsaw V8, Alfa Romeo's musical V6, The contented burble of a straight six in a BM or similar, and of course the hissy-coffee-percolating noise of a blown head gasket in anything French.
"Flat" engines like the Porsche 6 and Subaru 4 have their own distinct rough-edged wuffle. On a more general note, there's the armaggedon-like rumbling of an American big-block, and the frantic buzz of a Japanese multi-valve four. You've also got the various noises emitted by turbo- and super-charged engines, with the latter having an almost jet engine whistle. The former is similar, until you start using things like anti-lag, at which point it pops and bangs like it's one step away from self-destruction.

Depending on where the car is manufactured will have a large bearing on the sound of the engine overall. A European car will have a sound that reasonates higher then that of american. Japanese cars will have a longer lasting sound since they have a much higher RPM rev limit. American cars, are generally much rougher and lower since the displacement is much larger overall. You can gain just about any sound you want from a genearl engine. Find the size you want and get accurate accounts of discplacement and airflow. Match them to the car of your dreams and with a little work on intake systems and exhaust, you can have a great sounding car that is functional, withint your price range, and a head turner as well.

Each engine has it own unique acoustic characteristics which can be somewhat modified by engine running conditions. The manufacturer uses exhaust system plumbing, converters and mufflers to tune the exhaust to whatever sound level and frequencies it wishes to hear exiting the tailpipes. One aspect of car's persona is set by its exhaust sounds. Therefore, to a large extent, the exhaust sounds are not just engine sounds, they are engine sounds artificially arranged for aesthetic purposes.

Try these sites:
for a 350z with many different exhausts and their unique sounds.

for jetta/bora vr6. They are similar in tone like porsche.

Those two cars sound great with the right exhaust. I love the way a porsche sounds too.
