I'm American, of Irish-German decent. I'm Catholic. Nothing super special about me. My wife is 22, and she is Indian, and smokin' hot! We we're watching this movie called, The Inside Man, with Denzel Washington in it. In the begining, there is this song called, "Chaiya, Chaiya". It's Indian, in Urudu. Beautiful. Then we watched the movie, Dil Se, where that is kind of like the "theme song" of that movie. Very popular song. Now I love Bollywood and all that snazzy music, eventhough my wife is from Andra Pradesh. What do you think of that culture?
Not to brag, but my wife and I ment in England, and I went to Cambridge University. I'm a lot older than her, and I met her when she was a student, and I was just there for my mentor teachers majoring in German Mythology. I don't know. I just felt like saying that.

Happy Thor's-day!

Yeah we Indian girls are really coming into our own... Bollywood in becoming somewhat synonymous with Indian culture. Which is part funny and part scary. Considering that Bollywood was very uncool even in India up untill a few years ago. But then what is Indian culture? Your wife will tell you about how Andhra has its own culture, which is totally different from say, Gujarat or Punjab, or Bollywood. And Andhra Pradesh has its own very thriving film industry that rakes in millions.
Bollywood is fun. Unreal, overpaid, overwatched and fun.

Well I am a Canadian and I love Bollywood. I love everything about Bollywood. I eat and breath Bollywood. When I go to India I load up on magazines about Bollywood so I can catch up on all the gossip. My husband, son and I watch a Bollywood movie every night.

My husband is from Lucknow (UP). We were married in Canada then moved to England (Shropshire) for 4 years, now we're back in Canada but want to build a house in New Delhi. I've seen the movie Dil Se and absolutely hated it (except for that song Chaiya Chaiya.

I was watching the Ruby Wacks show in England when they were interviewing people who were watching the shooting of Kabhie Kushi Kabhi Gham. One girl was saying that Bollywood movies were for the uneducated masses. I think that's sheer nonsense. I also have a university degree, as does my husband and when we watch a movie, we like to enjoy ourselves. We certainly aren't mindless! I love the culture, I love the clothes, I love the music. I think it's sad that people in India are trying to be more western. In my opinion, the western culture is so sleazy and corrupt, who would like to be more like that!

Ooo Ahh India!

Hello I am an Indian American living in the United States. I don't personally like the culture of Bollywood. Basically a large portion of it is glitter with little to no substance. Most actors release a new movie every week. It is simply not possible to do this and create artistic work.

It depends on the person. I have some Indian friends who live and breathe Bollywood films. Others couldnt care less. Personally I like to watch a good Bollywood movie sometimes. Something light and entertaining with catchy music. With English subtitles the language isnt a problem.

Yes everyone in India is influenced by Bollywood in some way or the other. Same with me. But we must realise that Bollywood is not India (mostly). It is at best a caricature (colorful, melodramatic etc etc) of the Indian society. Trying to find any reality in mainstream Bollywood movie is a waste of time. Just enjoy, laugh, cry and forget about it. If you really want to see good Indian movies please see movies from Satyajeet Ray, Bimal Roy, Shyam Benegal etc.

i m an indian, living in america and i left india at a very young age...bollywood is a gud way to sort of keep in touch with the indian culture...i know sum ppl think that it is all a business but a lot of of the culture has depth, u only have to be able to understand it...it is basically a glamorous culture. Now however i personally think that the culture is being influenced 2 much by the western culture and losing its uniqueness

"Influenced" is a strong word rather "amused" is more like it in my case (also not Indian).

Bollywood culture is so not Indian culture, because Indian culture is truly deeper. At first, I was disgusted by the showing and zero-calorie mindless spectacle for 3 hrs. Then, why be so serious, it's just good fun and a job-creating industry for India.

I like the clothes, the song and mindless fun. Bollywood movies - something to relax into...

Bollywood is not the right word to call Indian film industry. Hindi movies is second largest movie industry in India. Telugu movies make largest number of movies in India. There are Malayam movies, Tamil movies, Bengali movies, and more.

The popularity of Indian movies is increasing. It is because Indian movies are very entertaining, colorful, and musical. The heroes used to be goody-goody man expert in dancing, singing, and bashing villians to save beautiful damsel in distress. The influence of these characters helped some actors run a successful career in politics too. Some fans have even built temples for their favorite actors and actresses :-)

There are great directors such as Satyajit Ray who has made very amazing movies.
