People in Finland claim many health benefits for the sauna, and who am I to dispute the experience of a nation that has used saunas for centuries? But for me, as an American who discovered the sauna on a trip to Finland, I find the main benefit is that it's very relaxing. It also really opens the pores and makes you feel that you're clean even below skin level. Many American contraptions labeled as saunas are not saunas at all, but merely steam baths or whirlpools. A true sauna is dry heat - and VERY, VERY hot; for some reason if it's hot enough it is more comfortable than if it is a few degrees cooler - with occasional quick bursts of steam. This alternates with quick dips in a cold lake, or, lacking a lake, a very cold shower, then back into the heat. The whole process should be leisurely - a couple of hours of hot/cold/hot/cold/hot/cold/hot - and be followed by lots of fluids and some salty food. I can believe my Finnish friends who say it cures whatever ails you!

It cleans you. You end up sweating out toxins in your body. A personal trainer told me this.
