One reason might be because the feathers would protect him from the sun and he could be free, something they were unable to be. A bird is considered free because it can fly whereever it wants to go. It seems to have few limitations, and it can see the whole world from up above, something those children could never do.
As for your answer, I don't think it's because he liked the sun; he wanted to know about life in the sun, as they had only known darkness and nighttime.

They made him into a bird because compared to us birds are free... so free that they can fly... the children were restricted by their parents to obey them ( a type of chains... )... the parents may even represent the way society also tries to protect us with all types of rules but at the same time it infringes on our autonomy...
hope that makes sens...

I've never read the book, but to my guess, I think that they made him a bird because he wanted to explore the world, but since he melted and didn't get the chance to, they decided to make him into a bird, so that way, he will be able to do as he pleases, which is exploring the world or surrounding! =)

It's as good of an answer as any. Often folk tales are based on interesting and silly things. Frank Baum came by " OZ" looking at a file cabinet draw marked O-Z!
Here's a free movie with a cool special effect for your good answer! http://www.coca-cola.com/icokeplatform/home.htm?scid=stage&cid=150002&sid=150856&lang=en_US

there could be alot of different reasons the turned him into a bird,
though i always thought it was because they thought birds were the free-est animals, and the boy wished to be free.
ps. this is one of my favorite stories!!

I would need to see the actual story to be able to answer your question, why don't you cut, copy paste it into your question? Claire

I would think to give wings so that he can soar and always be free.
