A canker sore is an infection of the gum tissue inside your mouth; it has nothing to do with the herpes virus, that is a cold sore which is different.

Buy a product called "KANKA" at the drugstore (oral health isle); it is much better than orajel. It looks like nail polish, a small vial with a blue cap. It forms an artificial skin on top of the sore and allows it to heal. I used to get a lot of those cankers and have tried everything. Trust me, it works great.

Drink a lot of water, you get them easier if your mouth is dry, as when you have a cold.

What are canker sores?
Canker sores are small ulcer craters in the lining of the mouth that are frequently painful and sensitive. About 20% of the population (1 out of 5) people have canker sores at any one time. Canker sores are also medically known as aphthous ulcers.

Women are more likely than men are to have recurrent canker sores. Genetic studies show that susceptibility to recurrent outbreaks of the sores is inherited in some patients. This partially explains why family members often share the condition.
What are the causes of canker sores?
The cause of canker sores is not well understood. More than one cause is likely, even for individual patients. Canker sores do not appear to be caused by viruses or bacteria, although an allergy to a type of bacterium commonly found in the mouth may trigger them in some people. The sores may be an allergic reaction to certain foods. In addition, there is research suggesting that canker sores may be caused by a faulty immune system that uses the body's defenses against disease to attack and destroy the normal cells of the mouth or tongue.
Treatment

Since canker sores heal by themselves, treatment is not usually necessary. Pain relief remedies, such as topical anesthetics, may be used to reduce the pain of the sores. The use of corticosteroid ointments sometimes speeds healing. Avoidance of spicy or acidic foods can help reduce the pain associated with canker sores.

Alternative treatment

Alternative therapies for canker sores are aimed at healing existing sores and preventing their recurrence. Several herbal remedies, including calendula (Calendula officinalis), myrrh (Commiphora molmol), and goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), may be helpful in the treatment of existing sores. Compresses soaked in teas made from these herbs are applied directly to the sores. The tannic acid in a tea bag can also help dry up the sores when the wet tea bag is used as a compress. Taking dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) tea or capsules may help heal sores and also prevent future outbreaks. Since canker sores are often brought on by stress, such stress-relieving techniques as meditation, guided imagery, and certain acupressure exercises may help prevent canker sores or lessen their severity.

There is a product called Orabase for cancer sores. It puts a kind of protective cover over it. Also, watch out for tomatoes, grapefruits, and salty products.

Orajel helps extremely well.
It helps alleviate some of the pain and medicates it.
Kind of like Neosporin, but for the inside of your mouth. :]
