you live in a fascist country get used to it. they can get rid of you for any reason they want to. legally they can't fire you for your transportation method if you make it to work on time (they can't ask about it either) but can fire you for not following dress code or just saying you didn't meet the company's quality standards.

In real estate, yes a boss does have the right to tell you to have an up to date nice looking car. Or if clothes are too shabby. You are after all representing the firm. Would you trust an agent in dated frumpy clothes and a beater car from the 80's?

If you need a DEPENDABLE car, then it is your boss telling you that you need a good form of transportation. And yes, your boss does have the right to tell you to get new clothes, especially in a professional atmosphere. Think of uniforms at companies? You think it is illegal to have a uniform for a company? It is the same with the attire you pick out daily, it is a type of "uniform" persay that represents their company.

Perhaps you are not dressing for the job? Maybe he has a right to ask that of you. But why the car? Does it in involve using your car? I think that might be going beyond what is right. Do you keep your car clean..inside and out? Maybe that's all it needs?

Good luck!

I don't think it is ethical to ask your employee to buy a new car, but in some work places they do have polices that state that clothes must be up to date, and not old, wrinkly, or infested with holes.
