Linear means the line is straight when graphed, and nonlinear means it has curves. The first nonlinear examples you will learn about are those that use exponents.

Algebraically, a linear function is a polynomial where the occurrances of x are to the power of 1. Examples of linear functions are:

f(x) = 6 - 2x
f(x) = (-1/5)x + 7
f(x) = 5(x + 2) + 3

The following are NOT linear functions:

f(x) = x^2 + 5x + 2
f(x) = x^3
f(x) = e^x + 2 {this is not a polynomial}
f(x) = sqrt(x)

Remember that all equations represent graphs so we call linear ecuations to those which graphic representation is a line it can have positive or negative slope or positive slope.
