"Solve for" means get the variable (the letter) on one side of the equal sign by itself. So you'll have x = something. Your equation is 4x - 8 = 4. So x is being multiplied by 4 and having 8 taken away from it.

We know that in order to undo subtraction (take away) you must add and in order to undo multiplying you must divide. The trick is to remember whatever you do to one side of the equal sign you also have to do to the other side.

So 4x - 8 = 4. Let's add 8 to both sides. We get:

4x - 8 (+8) = 4 (+8)

When we simplify we get

4x = 12

Got that? Now we have x still being multiplied by 4. So to undo this we'll divide BOTH sides by 4. Now we get:

4x (/4) = 12 (/4)

When we simplify we get

x = 3

That's it. That's your answer. Hope this helps.

Good luck in your math.

ok

4x-8 = 4

add 8 to both sides

4x = 12

so

x = 12/4 = 3
