The beauty of the ACT is that you can take it as many times as you want! If you don't like your first score, take it again. Like the previous answerer, I took the ACT three times. The first time I scored a 27, then a 28, then a 30. While I did prepare somewhat, I never did any hardcore studying. Much of the test deals with basic comprehension skills.

For the reading section, everything you need is said within the written sample. Similarly, in the science section, the questions deal with your ability to recognize trends and information presented in charts and graphs. You don't need to know any special laws in order to do well here.

I would, however, recommend using an ACT prep book. I browsed through one before I took the test my final try. It helped refresh my memory on certain math equations and grammar problem areas. I used an out-of-date one, and it still helped a great deal. (I think we picked it up at a used book sale for a couple of dollars. No need to go buy the latest and greatest.)

If you've given the ACT your best shot, and you just can't seem to get the score you want, try the SAT. Some people find one test more compatible to them than the other, so try them both and see which one suits you best. (But take both; some colleges require one of them specifically.)

As with any test, get a good night's rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and come prepared with your test slip, pencils and erasers, and a graphing calculator that you know how to use.

Good luck!

It depends on how much you learned from school. If you got good grades and retained the information, then you'll be fine. I got straight A's all through high school and scored a 31 my junior year. I didn't study at all. I took it 2 other times before that to get some experience. My first time was in the 7th grade, and I took it again in 10th. In the Reading section you will read 4 passages and answer questions about what happened and the author's feelings. The English section is grammar and moving sentences in a paragraph so it makes more sense. The Math section covers everything up to Trig/Pre-cal I think. And the Science section is a lot of reading graphs. I think that sums it up pretty well!
