virgin mobile has the oyster for like 20 bucks you can get it at walmart... i had virgin mobile for three years... i loved it... my friend had boost and it ate up your minutes like crazy.. if you get virgin get one of the plans (still prepaid) that lets you get discounted minutes for like .35 cents a day if she is a big talker it will make it cheaper in the long run... i also looked into t-mobile and it was really expensive... the cingular go phone isnt bad... you get to pick from the top models of phones out now and you have the free in network calling... that would prolly be pretty good too.. i have a contract with cingular now and i love it... and if you have a family plan the extra lines are only 9.99 a month... you could get the main line and then just have her get the add a line... you get to pick your plan and change it as often as you want.

Ask her how she wants to use the phone.

Mostly text? Go for a plan from Alltel/ Verizon because you can get unlimited text for the plans- they also were just reported by consumer reports as top preformers and #1

Mostly talking? Minuets are cheaper with any pre-paid monthly plan compared to per-minuet rates but the carrier maybe a problem for you depending on where you live.

Small town/mid-size town (less than 100,000) don't go for cingular or t-mobile they are geared towards larger cities and reception isn't as good in smaller towns- sometimes NONE at all

Big city?- Go for what fits the two of you best
