you need a router.
cable in to modem then ethernet to router...the router acquires the IPaddress from your ISP. The router has a dhcp server built in that provides private ipaddresses for multiple nodes on a network...computers, network printers, network storage devices...etc.
then set each computer to automatically obtain its ipaddress and plug them into the switch built in to the router.

Ok you can get an ethernet hub, they are fairly cheap. This will allow you to change that one outlet to multiple outlets. Or you can go wireless for a little more money. As a matter of fact if you have a cable conection you may have another outlet on the modem in the back. If not try the usb outlet on the modem. If that still doesn't work then you may need to install the internet software from the cable company on the second computer then you should be up and running.
Peace.

If you can physically connect the two computers together with a network cable, then run the network set-up wizard from CONTROL PANEL . NETWORK CONNECTIONS on both computers, it will give you the option of using the main one to connect directly to the internet when you run it on the secondary one, you choose "this computer connects through andother computer or through and internet gateway.
It's fairly siomple to just follow the instructions on the wizard and you should be up and running in no time (well ten minutes anyway).

You don't mention if you have cable or DSL, so I will assume dial-up.
You need network cards (NIC) in both computers. You will need to buy a small hub or switch from someone like BestBuy. Should be $15 to $45 for a 4 port.
The computer that uses the modem to dial will need a PROXY SERVER. Analog Proxy makes a free one...

Follow their instructions and make the appropriate settings in the other computer so it knows to work through the first one.
Have fun!

Go to the computer store, buy a linksys router... Plug the cable modem into the router with an ethernet wire and then using two more ethernet wires plug the two computers into the router. If you have windows xp it should just work.
