"fuel is aired up at fuel filter" = this sounds like the fuel filter gasket was leaking, allowing the fuel to siphon back to the tank, drawing in air to replace it.

1.)seal the leaks

2.) If there is air still in the fuel line you will need to bleed it out. Make sure your fuel filter is filled all the way to the top with diesel. Then there will be a fuel line that runs into the fuel pump. Crack the line open about a half a turn. Once you do that have someone roll the engine over and over. This will let the air bleed out of the fuel lines. Keep rolling the engine over until the engine fires off. Once it fires off close the fuel line off while it is running.

Other Option:

3.)drag that puppy around the block a time or two to get her started...

Does this help any?

Air in fuel is caused by a vacuum leak in the fuel line before it gets to the pump. Trace the line from the tank to the pump and look for dirt accumulation on the outside of the line indicating a leak. If there is not enough diesel leaking out when the engine is not running, you may have to pressurize the tank to find the leak.
