My University gave me a second chance instead of dropping me they put me on academic probation. I went last semester and made no friends and failed 3 classes its time to make some serious changes. I want to make at least one good friend, participate more in class (although being a little shy inhibits me), and get straight A's this semester. Does anyone have any plans that can help me achieve these goals because apparently my way is not working?

Same thing happened to me and this is how I dealt with it:

1. You make a commitment that you will never miss a class, not even one. You will go to class every time it's on and you will not leave early.
1.5. And do every single assignment and every single extra credit no matter how stupid, boring, long, or difficult it might be. Most teachers just give the majority of credit to students who show up and do all the assignments... an A is only a little more work from that point on.
2. Find the smart people in your class (usually sitting in the front) and sit close to them.
3. Always try to volunteer in class with questions and answers. This keeps your mind alert and on the subject.
4. You can try to form a study group or ask people if they are in study groups and ask if you can join.
5. Whenever you ask somebody a question or someone asks you something use the opportunity to introduce yourself, ask their name, ask them about other classes they are taking. Then every time you see them say hi to them and use their name.

What you should remember is everyone is shy and in a new environment so if you open up others might too.

Jim Z's suggestions are right on target. You must commit yourself to your work. If you had a job where you wanted to succeed, you wouldn't miss a day of work, or ever arrive late. You would always be prepared. You would be friendly to your co o workers and your boss. . Treat college the same way just as Jim suggests.

Also, you do need some recreation, so join a club. Join a music singing group, or the theatre club, or a service club that does community projects like Habitat for Humanity. Hang out with positive, non-drinking, non-smoking people who are a serious about success, and you will be successful.

Join a campus organization to make friends on campus. Get a tutor in classes that you may have problems in. Talk to you professors about any problems you have in class. Join study groups.
