I am really excited about beckhams arrival, but dissapointed that with that kind of money (a supposed 275 million dollars) that the LA galaxy would only get beckham.

With that kind of money, they could have improved the team SO much more. Even though beckham is the most famous and popular player in the world, they could have hired at least 4 world class players who would have made the league so much more fun to watch and thus popular. In addition the combination of the fame of those 4 players would probably equal if not top that of beckham. For example, Ronaldo, Del Piero, Buffon, and even possibly henry for that amount of money.

One must realize what an insane amount of money that is... Larsson, a very famous swedish player who is questionably better then beckham, was signed for only 2 million dollars... This is 140 times that...

Also I think this puts it in perspective:
TOP FIVE ALL-TIME TRANSFERS
Zinedine Zidane; Juventus - Real Madrid £44m
Luis Figo; Barcelona - Real Madrid £37m
Hernan Crespo; Parma - Lazio £35.5m
Gianluigi Buffon; Parma - Juventus £32.6m
Christian Vieri; Lazio - Inter £31m

He costs 3 times as much as Zidane? that is just wrong...

Read the small print - the guy is "only" earning $10 million a year over five years (thats $50mil in total for those bad at maths!).

The extra $200 million comes from his worldwide endorsements, which is a separate deal from what MLS are paying him. That's his deal with CAA (Creative Artists Agency) and 19 Entertainment. So in terms of what he is paid by the American Soccer League, it is "peanuts" (if you can call $10 mil that..) compared to "star" players in the basball/American football/basketball leagues.

So, the MLS is only paying 20% of that figure, the rest is from his marketing money with those two entertainment companies.

Thinking about how the now defunct North American Soccer League bankrupted itself back in the 70's by signing star players - at the ends of their careers - on huge salaries, i do wonder if the same thing is about to happen to the MLS.

I mean, while some American sportsmen earn $25mil+ a year, they are playing sports which Americans actually watch....

Beckham is a class player. Although, the reason his salary is so large is to increase soccers popularity in America and hopefully influence other big named athletes to come over here. After USA's dismal effort in the world cup, ESPN was making an effort to broadcast more MLS soccer games so people can become more interested. Ultimately, this is a gamble for the MLS. In soccer years, he is old and starting to decline. I think for a marketing standpoint, yes he is worth the cash. Other players that are better than him, most likely would've recieved a monetary value close to his, but, his name globally everyone knows.

Everyone has got his salary wrong. LA Galaxy aren't paying him a million a week, that is the total he will make through his wages, sponsorships and everything else on top of that.

LA Galaxy are only paying him 10 million a year. I say only, but that's still huge.

LA Galaxy are also getting him for free since his contract runs out in the summer so it is good business for them. I'm sure the excitement he will generate out there will make them more than 10 million a year.

The press have just jumped on this story as a way to make Beckham look greedy and selfish since everyone seems to have jumped on the "We hate Beckham" bangwagon since the WC (despite him being one of the only players on the pitch who seemed to give a damn). Personally I think he could still do a job in the Premiership, but if he wants to play in the states, good luck to him.

Talent wise no. He is a good player but he is not world class any more but if you look at how many shirts and merchandise that team will now sell around the world plus the coverage the league will get then yes he does deserve it. and if he does manage to make football popular over there maybe he will deserve more

What David Beckham did signing with the LA Galaxy for 5 years / $250 million dollars is what any of us would do if the opportunity presented itself. I really can't blame David Beckham or any professional athlete for that matter for signing for the most amount of money if someone out there is willing to pay him (or her).

The people who complain about how much athletes getting paid are usually jeolous of them because they won the genetic lottery, have game, and are getting paid for it. If someone were to offer you that kind of mad money to play a game, you would jump at the offer too.

If someone would have paid me $250 million over 5 years, I would sign that contract in blood. To tell you the truth, I would almost feel like I should be doing something sexually degrading for $50 mill per year. LOL

American Football players, Basketball players and Baseball players get that kind of money all the time. He is certainly overpaid but what athlete is not?! Some do deserve it others don't, but don't forget he is a brand and his brand will sell some stuff and he WILL be the best player in the MLS.

No...nobody deserves that kind of money, but this is not about soccer talent or technical skills, it is about a product and the marketing skills of his agent combined with American hype, he will boost the revenue of that club through sales of products and attendances around the country so if Beckham and his marketing team can get it good luck to him!

The only people that deserve that kind of money are the ones living in 3rd World countries, or below the breadline, struggling to make ends meet on a daily basis.

That money could clear countries debts (over 5 yrs), it could feed millions and pay for medicines etc...,

I have always believed that footballers were overpaid; and think that this is obscene.

The world has gone mad!!
